Gillooly’s Farm, one of Gauteng’s well-known green public spaces, is entering a new era as it undergoes restoration and is reimagined as Gillooly’s Gardens. The project will maintain and protect the area as a safe and welcoming public open space, with the vision to preserve what generations of visitors have loved about the farm.
The renewed experience will include a family restaurant, gardens, a walking trail, family activities, a market, community events and an amphitheatre. Live shows will invite audiences to experience music and performances in one of Johannesburg’s most familiar natural settings.
Gillooly’s has been part of the area’s history for over 80 years. Originally owned by James Gillooly, the 44 hectare property was sold to the city council in 1944 and named in his honour. It is known for its lake, walking trails, birdlife, picnic areas and open lawns which have provided residents and visitors with a welcome escape from the city.
The next chapter honours this rich history and is being relaunched as an events venue, botanical garden and lifestyle ecosystem. The natural environment will remain central to the upgrade and the project is guided by a commitment to long-term stewardship, community connection, environmental care and public benefit.
